Combining phonics skills, reading strategies, and writing is such a fun and rewarding part of my day-especially now when I get to hear the opinions of my students! Each child is unique, and they all have differing opinions and reasons for their opinions. The students are doing a fabulous job using what they know about complete paragraphs to share their opinions, give solid reasons and evidence, and conclude their writing. I am having so much fun reading their writing and getting to know all of my kiddos even better :)
March has kept us busy working on research and informational writing! Not only did we learn how to read nonfiction texts and record facts about our topic, we were able to develop sophisticated paragraphs that highlight the main idea and important details we wanted to share with our reader. :)
Writing informational pieces that give the steps in a process is more challenging than it might seem! Last week, our students learned the importance of creating detailed instructions when we practiced making lemonade together! They said "squeeze the lemons", so I squeezed them...all over the table! They were pretty careful with what they told me to do after that :) Later, they were able to write their own nonfiction text titled "How To Make Lemonade".
On Friday we celebrated 100 days of learning through creative writing. The students pictured their lives as a 100 year old person and described themselves using both words and an illustration. The projects are precious and very creative! My favorite things the kids described were being wrinkled and walking with a cane, playing bingo or bowling with their other old people friends, and having grandchildren :)
We are welcoming Ms. G to our first grade class! She will be our classroom assistant and has been working with the students to push their thinking on reading and writing. Continue getting back into the routine of studying sight words nightly and please let me know if you need a new list :)
I am so excited by the wonderful reading and writing gains that our kiddos have made this year! Watching them grow and gain confidence is a wonderful sight to behold :) I am looking forward to seeing them tomorrow and hearing all about their winter breaks!
Time is flying by as we work diligently in first grade to learn to read and write with accuracy and stamina! Our kiddos are doing an awesome job participating during lessons, collaborating in literacy stations, and pushing themselves to learn new words! Right now we are working on consonant blends such as sh, ch, th, wh, etc. and endings like ing, ed, s, etc. We are also working with word families to create rhymes that help us read and write skillfully. Please continue to read nightly with your child and discuss the book to help with comprehension and understanding new words. Thank you for all that you do to help us be successful at school!
I can't tell you how thrilled I am to have the amazing group of first graders that I do! Together we are going to learn so much, and it is my hope that I will develop a passion for reading and writing in your child. Your support at home will make all the difference in your child's education! Please support his or her learning by reading nightly together for 20 minutes. Take time to discuss the books, retell the story, and make connections to the text - all of these are essential componants of comprehension that we are working to develop right now.
